It’s time to get serious about your rummage sale items. Please consider what you might donate and plan on getting your donations to church on Monday, February 8th. Also please take the enclosed Rummage Sale flyer and post it at your association building, a favorite restaurant, and/or place of business to give us that extra bit of advertising we need. We are looking forward to another successful Rummage and Bake Sale this year – thanks for all your help!!

Our next Rummage and Bake Sale will be held on February 13th from 8am-1pm. We will be featuring:

Apricot, Nut & Poppy Seed Rolls
Stuffed Cabbage (Holupkie) & Pierogi

Please remember Mrs. Anna Techansoff, Mrs. Helen Pershyn who is in Harbor Chase Rehabilitation on Pinebrooke, Matushka Sascha Hammet who is now resting at home, Barbara Demis who continues to recover and serve our Community at the same time, George Stevens who is in Englewood Community Hospital, and Janet Ranchetti who is in Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte.

Growth Committee Update

The Growth Committee met both this week and last to begin the process of working through the various alternatives available for the continued growth and vitality of the Holy Spirit Community. Property on Englewood Road is under consideration as well as a variety of ideas for growth at our current location. We have been consulting with Mr. Chuck Kinter, who was instrumental in the recent renovation/expansion of Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Venice Island, to gain insight on his experiences during that very large undertaking. In addition, Brian Levine has prepared a demographics map which graphically indicates the “make-up” of the Holy Spirit Community. We are gathering information and ideas at this point and are keeping all options on the table. No money has been spent and no commitments have been made. The Committee invites comments, suggestions, and most of all your prayers as we work our way through the challenge of how to grow.

The Possible Impossibility

Love is one of many themes for Meatfare Sunday. Love that is not just a mere humanitarian concern for abstract justice and the anonymous poor, but concrete and personal love for any human person. Yes, we are called to care for mankind in a general way and to press for a more humane society, but Christian love is something more – something much more personal.

Christian love is the “possible impossibility”. We must see Christ in other men and women whoever they are. People whom God has introduced us to, if just for a moment, that we might begin an eternal companionship in God and through God.

A Meatfare Dinner Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who participated in any way in the 2010 Annual Meatfare Dinner. Particular thanks go to Lynne Morris and George and Arelia Jacobs, to Stacey Gounaris of Gold Rush Barbeque and Angelo’s Deli and Restaurant for their donation of food items and their continued support and hard work. Also a huge thank you to the people of the United Church of Christ who so graciously allowed us to use their kitchen facilities and hall. The Meatfare Dinner brought in $2,225.00. Most of all thank you to everyone who joined us in fellowship and supported this important fundraiser!

Congratulations to the 2010 Church Council who were elected by unanimous consent at the Annual Parish Meeting. They are Barbara Demis – Church Warden, Jeff Constant – Vice Warden, Lynne Morris – Secretary, Gregory Bochnak – Treasurer, Nora Moussa – Trustee and Albert Maruskin – Trustee. Everyone on the Council wishes to thank you for your continued confidence and support and pledges to work diligently through this important period in the history of our Community. Please note the “SUGGESTIONS” leaflets that have been prepared for your use. They are located on the brochures table and are provided so that you might make known your suggestions on any issue in an anonymous and less formal way. Please do not hesitate to make use of this opportunity to participate in the continued progress of our Community.

Agape Flights receives gifts from Holy Spirit Church

On Tuesday February 2nd a delegation from Holy Spirit Church delivered a check to Agape Flights which included donations from our Community given in the special missions and charities offering over the previous three Sundays. Your gracious generosity was once again demonstrated by your works and a check was presented to Agape Flights for $1,500.00 to go directly for aid to the Haitian earthquake victims. We heard many harrowing stories of survival and heroic attempts to help those in need. The flight hangar was filled with food, medicine, and items of every imaginable description and people were working hand to hand to prepare these items for direct shipment to Haiti. The director of Agape Flights said that because of their previous work in Haiti they had been some of the earliest and most effective help to the people “on the ground” because they already knew how to get in and out of the air strips and around the country without bureaucratic complication. We are tentatively planning another opportunity to participate in this offering to Haiti in the near future. Thank you everyone who donated and for all your prayers. We really are making life easier for those who have been hurt so badly!
